Earlier it was common with light levels in the range 100 - 300 lux for normal activities. Today the light level is more common in the range 500 - 1000 lux - depending on activity. For precision and detailed works the light level may even approach 1500 - 2000 lux.
How many lux is normal?
Lighting condition | From (lux) | To (lux) |
---|---|---|
Normal Indoors | 401 | 1000 |
Bright Indoors | 1001 | 5000 |

Does 1 lux equal 1 lumen?
One lux (1 lux) is defined as being equivalent to one lumen spread over an area of one square metre. To put it another way: A specification in lux tells you how many Lumens (total light output) you need given the measured area you are trying to illuminate.

Can plants get too much artificial light?
Most houseplants do well with 12-16 hours of artificial fluorescent light each day. Too little light will result in elongated, spindly growth and too much light will cause a plant to wilt, color to fade, soil to become excessively dry and foliage to burn. Plants also require a rest period each day.
